Re-engaging Learners: Innovative Strategies to Support ALL Students

Monday, June 23, 2025
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Goodwill West Louisville Opportunity Center
2820 W Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211

Join an important conversation about ways to re-engage middle and high school students through better collaborations between schools, families and community-based services.

Adolescents are wired to explore and grow. When school “works” for a young person, they are on a path to graduate prepared for college or career. In our community, many young people are signaling that school isn’t working for them through repeated unexcused absences or suspensions, low academic performance, or preferences for online learning only.

Topics in Education Re-engagement

The Book Works is hosting a day-long convening to lift up the reasons why teens are “disconnecting” from school, and the collaborative and innovative community-based programs, district and state policies, and everyday practices that can help all students find a path to graduation.

Safety & Belonging

Physical and verbal violence in school, the community, and online are significantly impacting the mental health of youth. These sessions discuss the ways violence are impacting student attendance and academic performance, and ways collaboration can help.

Build Skills

Many “off track students” lack academic, social, and life skills they need to succeed in school. These sessions highlight the ways community organizations and families can work with schools to help middle and high school students build these skills.

Education Options

For students with family or work responsibilities, with special education needs, or behind in credits, the path to graduation can be limited. In these sessions, attendees learn about the effective education pathways needed in our community to ensure all students graduate.

Student Voice

Middle and high school students have a lot to say about how to engage them in school. These sessions lift up the work of student groups advocating for mental health services, equitable education access, and resources to succeed in school.
